Innate Therapies, in combination with PCYC Mareeba and Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation have been working together to engage the Mareeba community in art-based therapeutic intervention through group work. We were invited to work with the “Mums and Bubs” group at the Child and Family Centre (CFC) and the “Youth Group” at Firth Park.
Our two therapists Donna and Evan have provided group activities to community members of all ages with the favourite activity being the creation of a mask. Using paint and paintbrushes, members of the community have been able to create many unique masks, ranging from intricate T.V show and movie characters to amazing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
Feedback from the sessions has overall been positive, with many enjoying taking the time to create something meaningful to them and using art as a form of expression, especially when you don’t always have the words.
